Posts: 32 03/26/08 7:28 AM	Tags : None Those Libertarians who have earned credibility with Ron Paul Revolutionaries by participating in his campaign should try and get the word out about Dr. Ruwart's connection with Dr. Paul. My own unofficial press release: Longtime Ron Paul favorite Dr. Mary Ruwart enters Libertarian race for president Dr. Mary Ruwart, who was nominated in 2002 by Dr. Ron Paul to be FDA Commissioner, has entered the race for the Libertarian nomination. Ruwart, a former Assistant Professor of Surgery at St. Louis University Medical School and research scientist in the pharmaceutical industry, is the author of Healing Our World in an Age of Aggression, a primer on libertarianism which Dr. Paul says "bridges the gap between conservatives and liberals, Christians and New Agers, special interests and the common good, with practical solutions to our economic and societal woes." In her turn, Dr. Ruwart supported Ron Paul in his Libertarian presidential bid in 1988, and has indicated that her campaign intends to promote Dr. Paul's Health Freedom Act proposal now in Congress. She has announced that her three campaign themes will be Foreign Policy, The Economy, and Health Care, all issues in which she and Paul are in virtually total agreement. Her popular Internet column for the non-political educational group Advocates for Self Government, "Ask Dr. Ruwart", provides short answers to the tough libertarian questions, and archives of her answers can be found at www.askdrruwart.com. Posts: 2 03/26/08 3:38 PM	I will wear my Ruwart button to all Ron Paul meetup and Libertarian meetup events (as well as all other activist events!). There is also a member of our local meetup who used to host a spot on the Ron Paul radio. I don't know if he still does or not, but if so, I'm sure he would be open to interviewing Dr Ruwart.

Naturally, that's also where you should offer suggestions to the campaign if you have specific media contacts you think would be useful.

Friend, your post on ronpaulforums was one of the worse possible posts to attract non-libertarians Ron Paul supporters to Mary that will ever be posted ! You start it off with the most divisive topic in politics-ABORTION, then you say she is more-HARDLINE (a negative word to the majority of people) you go on to just RADICAL libertarianism-Radical is a negative and even a frightning word to most Americans. When introducing someone to a large group that you hope the group will start to support, you need to be POSITIVE about everything. Let them find negatives on their own. Don't supply them with something they can oppose to start with as, "she favors ABORTIONS". Force people to have to research to find things to oppose, don't furnish it for them ! Be POSITIVE when attempting to promote anyone or anything. I for one wish you would cancel that post, so no one else will read it !!! Everyone that has read your post to learn something about Mary now could comment whenever her name comes up that she is a RADICAL HARDLINER that's PRO-CHOICE ! In effect alienating everyone opposed to radicals, hardliners and pro-choice. Words matter !!! I hope I haven't made an enemy to start with, because down the road I'll watch your back and will need you to watch mine, because there are too few of us now not to stand together...

Posts: 32 03/28/08 7:06 AM	Sorry, but I get credit for the worst possible Ruwart post at a Ron Paul site. I crafted that beautiful press release style post, then stupidly preceded it with the opening sentence: "I think I know who Dr. Paul is going to be voting for in November, and it isn't John McCain. ;)" Although most Paul supporters recognize that he is not going to be on the November ballot, the ones who remain active at his site resent the suggestion that he will not, especially so long as he has not formally withdrawn. It was thoughtless of me to begin as I did. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Fortunately, some other libertarians on the site helped me out, and I was able to edit my post to apologize for the opening sentence. Oddly enough, I discovered that it was impossible to avoid having the abortion issue come up, as someone on that thread explicitly asked if she was pro-life, and I felt obliged to respond. Here is what I wrote: Every question you might think of asking ... ... has probably been addressed by her in the "Ask Dr. Ruwart" column she has been writing for the non-political Advocates for Self Government for several years (http://www.askdrruwart.co...). As a pro-choice man married to a pro-life woman who both see things the same way politically, I'd like to note that: (1) The rate of abortion in countries where abortion is illegal is at least as high as where it is legal. The goal is to actually have abortions not take place, and not just to change their legal status. Neither alcohol nor abortion prohibition worked in this country, and the latter it isn't working now around the world. (2) Abortion rates have dropped in this country for 20 straight years, even under Roe. Abortions are not available in 87% of the counties in the US, because there are no abortion providers in those counties. Compassionate persuasion and social pressure work. (3) Abortions have dropped because of effective persuasion by pro-life groups, increased social acceptance of single mothers, increasing prosperity, some loosening of restrictions on adoptions, and greater awareness about birth control. (4) The best answer in the private sector is to continue to persuade people and accept single mothers in the community. (5) The government can best help by deregulating the economy to increase prosperity faster, eliminate restrictions on adoption, including the power of government social workers to prevent interracial adoptions and adoptions by same sex couples, and abolish the FDA so that effective birth control can be both developed and advertised freely (Dr. Paul's nomination of Dr. Ruwart to be FDA Commissioner was not an accident). Also, nobody should ever be forced to pay for an abortion against their will, and that means ending taxpayer funding for Medicaid abortions and Planned Parenthood. (6) If abortion should be treated as murder, then the pregnant woman should face life in prison or execution, according to one's position on capital punishment. The fact that virtually nobody advocates this demonstrates that people rightfully believe there are solutions other than legal responses that are more appropriate. (7) If the goal is to bring abortions down to the level where medical necessity is the only reason anyone will ever consider it, WE'RE WINNING, and we're winning by using the private sector. We would be progressing faster if government got completely out of the way. ----------------- Actually, I thought that was a pretty good answer. At least it didn't earn any additional wrath. I thought notcarljung's post to that forum was better than mine at Daily Paul, but I do like the idea of answering specific issue questions with a link to www.askdrruwart.com, hoping that any objection over specific issues can be countered with the quality of her writing (she has always noted the conflict among libertarians on abortion in her responses). BTW, it is interesting to note that the Libertarian Party is the ONLY one where both pro-life and pro-choice candidates are widely accepted. Our platform has been pro-choice virtually throughout its history, yet most of our presidential nominees have been pro-life. In contrast, pro-choice Republicans and Constitutionalists are marginalized and driven away from their parties, and pro-life Democrats and Greens similarly persona non grata in theirs. Probvably 7 of whom are obsessed with bringing back the 1920's version of the Republican Party. The online presence of the "Ron Paul Revolution" has winded down significantly (at least on that forum). i can probably edit it. by the way, no offense taken. edit: done. Posts: 18 03/31/08 10:23 AM	I have been out to the Daily Paul many times. I have read many topics, and many posts by Ron Paul supporters regarding such topics. So, I will say this about some of the supporters: even though Dr. Paul has stated that the revolution is not about him, many of his supporters have fallen into the trap of the "cult of personality" so to speak. On one hand, they talk about the greater goal of achieving liberty in America. On the other hand, they continue to act only on the "leader's" instructions. They also continue to talk about "the need to get Dr. Paul elected". He is going to get elected . . . to his congressional seat, but it is now nearly an impossibility for him to get the Republican nomination. I believe that I am powerless to get these RP supporters to snap out of their trance. Less, you did the right thing in posting about Mary Ruwart at the Daily Paul, but many of the Paul supporters simply are in a cultish mode. They are not reachable for now, at least not until they do as they are told by their "leader" to support someone else to carry on the revolution for the 2008 campaign for president. BTW, this in no way is a slander on Ron Paul; it just is how things go. Some supporters just lose their sense of rationality and wider goals. SJL p.s. I love the question by one DP poster-re what's Mary Ruwart's abortion position. I have found that most "conservatives", even ones who support many libertarian initiatives, will make abortion their "acid test" for supporting a candidate or party. I have gotten the response at outreach booths where the person I spoke with, completely rejected the LP because it is perceived as staunchly "pro choice", while at the same time he or she agrees with 80-90% of libertarian positions. Posts: 18 03/31/08 10:30 AM	The point by "not carljung" where he says "The online presence of the 'Ron Paul Revolution' has winded down significantly (at least on that forum)" may be indicative that the only "presence" on the Daily Paul are the "I'm still trying to get Ron Paul elected until he tells me to stop" supporters. I think that if we are going to lure RP supporters, we'll need to look at different venues/avenues, etc to do that. SJL

Glitz it up, make it a vid reply to "High Tide" and other RP favorites.
